Understanding PSAT Scores
PSAT scores have become available. How do you access the scores and what do they mean?
The CollegeBoard will send an email containing the instructions needed to create an account. Once created, you will have the ability to download and print the score report. This report will show an Evidence-Based Reading & Writing score on a scale from 160-760 and a Math score on a scale from 160–760. These two scores added together will result in the Total score on a scale from 320-1520. Why are the scores not out of the standard SAT 1600? The PSAT is a shorter and slightly less challenging version of the SAT, thus resulting in different scales.
The score report will also contain percentiles. These percentiles rank your scores against a sample of other students and indicate the percentage of students who received a lower score than yours. For example, if your score is in the 75th percentile, you received a higher score than 75% of students in the sample.
Underneath each section score, there will be either a green checkmark or a yellow exclamation point. Given your current grade level, these college readiness benchmarks indicate if you are on track to handle college-level work. Beneath the benchmarks, you will see the test scores used to calculate your section, composite score, and National Merit Index. National Merit Index determines if you will be selected as a Commended Student or Semi-Finalist and is only open to 11th graders who sat for the PSAT and are U.S. citizens. There is not a set index number for selection; rather it is determined by the scores of current students. Students who qualify will be informed early during their senior year.
What is the next step?
Determine if and when you will utilize tutoring services. Look at the upcoming testing dates and develop a testing timeline that is best suited to your needs.
Remember: PSAT scores are a tool for understanding your areas of strength and those needing improvement. The scores are not shared with colleges and do not impact admission decisions.
