The college essay is a component of the application process. It is a space where you can be creative and have an opportunity to show the admissions office who you are. However, some students find uncertainty about what topic to write about and how to construct a stellar essay. Too often, the anxiety of beginning the essay brings on procrastination. Like anything else, the more we avoid something, the more challenging the work becomes. Instead of ignoring this task, accept that it exists and realize the time to work on it is now.
Why now?
During summer, students typically have more time to write and edit essays. We all know how busy life becomes in the fall when schedules fill with school, sports, and club commitments. The idea is for you to feel more comfortable and prepared by the beginning of next school year.
How do you begin that work?
First, look at the various application platforms. For example, the Common Application is the most widely accepted application among colleges and universities. It is a good idea to start there. In addition to the Common App prompts, you must consider other schools that utilize their application systems and look into what essays they ask students to construct. Also, remember that many schools have supplemental essays. These are shorter but can offer a powerful voice in your application.
