College Visits
Spring is in the air, and break is just around the corner! If you are a high
school junior, this time of the year is perfect for visiting colleges.
Why?
Spring break tours offer a great representation of campus life in motion. Walking the campus, you will be able to see if you are a good fit for that school.
How do you schedule a college visit?
Schedule campus visits through the individual college’s website. They can book quickly, and it is advised to schedule as soon as you solidify your travel plans. If you find a tour unavailable or not running, it is still good practice to visit the college campus. Find the student center, the library, and the dining hall, among other places. If you know of a family member or friend who attends that school- ask them to show you the campus. This opportunity is great because students are often excited to share their school, and give you a different campus perspective.
What questions should you ask on a college visit?
There are many questions to consider on a college visit. I advise breaking them down into 7 different areas:
Admissions: Admission statistics, deadlines, Honors Programs, standardized tests
Academics: Popular majors, study abroad opportunities, research, class size
Academic Support: Support services, a counseling center, a writing center, etc.
Housing & Food Services: Types of housing, % of students living on campus, meal plans
Student Life: campus environment, extracurricular activities, sports, Greek life.
Cost & Financial Aid: financial aid info, merit scholarships offered, work-study options
Additional Considerations: Career planning, safety, alumni network
